ONE BOOK TWO BOOK Celebration

Iowa City being a UNESCO City of Literature has its advantages and reminds me why living in Iowa City is great for families with children and adults who love books. Only in Iowa City would one find a weekend celebrating children’s books and authors, including lots of young local talent. The ONE BOOK TWO BOOK dinner this Friday evening featuring young authors from local elementary schools across the greater Iowa City area community was a terrific experience for these writers who got to hear each other, as did the audience, read their stories. The writers showed an amazing amount of courage and poise at the podium before the audience. Their stories were creative, articulate, and unique. Following the young writers reading their stories, the keynote speaker, Loren Long, was remarkably entertaining for all ages as he took everyone on a journey from his youth as a sports lover to his adult passion for illustrating and authoring children’s picture books, including Otis (http://www.lorenlong.com/). Later, Mr. Long was patient as he signed autographs and posed for pictures. My daughter was thrilled with the cow he drew for her. It speaks well for a community that so many people were willing to volunteer and that local businesses step up to support events celebrating literature. For more information and events on Saturday and Sunday, see http://www.onebooktwobook.org/.
